The Cost of Owning a Supercar – It’s About More than Just Dollars
Our service certifications and relationships with numerous dealers representing high end brands means that we have seen more “supercars” pass through our service bays than most any other body shop between Cape Coral and Naples. Of course when they show up at our facility these supercars often look like they have had an encounter with a large chunk of Kryptonite.
While there is no official definition for “supercar” generally speaking they are ridiculously fast, incorporate world class engineering in their design, are generally considered luxury sports cars but not always and the more vowels in the manufacturer’s name the more expensive they are. These mostly sleek sometimes hunky tigers roam the streets of Fort Myers, Estero, Bonita Springs and Naples on a regular basis.
So who are they? You’ll know them when you see them. The brands include Porsche Carrera, Nissan GT-R, Bentley Continental, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Audi R8, Maserati and the Americans…Chevy Corvette and Ford Shelby to name a few.
They go fast, upwards to 200 mph with sprint stats like 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. Most, not all come equipped with hand stitched leather luxury. Realistically the purchase price is about $100,000 to $375,000 but there are exceptions at both ends particularly the high end.
So once you get past the sticker price…how much does it cost to feed and house one of these exotic cars?
Of course if you can afford $2.4 million for a Lamborghini Veneno then $40,000 a year for insurance probably is not a big concern but for those who own the “reasonably priced” supercar models insurance is going to run 5% to 7% of the car’s current value. For example the $146,000 Audi R8 will cost about $8,000 per year to insure while the $183,000 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will run about $10,000.
Maintenance and Repair
These cars are, by market necessity, limited production vehicles. That means the parts for the supercars are also limited production and that means they are expensive. At Naples Premiere Collision Center we only use OEM parts but even if we didn’t, you aren’t going to find aftermarket replacement parts for say a Maserati GranTurismo. If you dent one of these things be prepared to pay.
Maintenance is another pricey item. Service typically needs to be done by an authorized dealer to protect the warranty. This means you will not be pulling your Nissan GT-R and its handcrafted engine into Jiffy Lube for an oil change. And then there are the tires. Most of these vehicles come with wide, sticky tires and wide and sticky comes at a premium price.
Your safety and the safety of your passengers could be the biggest cost of all. The supercars all come with superb engineering, fantastic suspension and stability systems, huge disc brakes and a suite of airbags. They also come with 500+ hp engines.
Unfortunately these supercars don’t necessarily come complete with qualified drivers. These cars are fast and if you get frisky with them they can be difficult for the inexperienced driver to keep under control and bring to a safe stop. But worse than the inexperienced supercar driver is the impaired supercar driver. When you hit a tree or a power pole or take a nose dive into one of our canals at 100+ mph all that’s going to be left is a pile of carbon fiber panels and hot metal parts. Always drive responsibly but particularly if you are behind the wheel of one of these beasts.
If you own one of these vehicles and ding it, and you live in Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Estero, Bonita Springs or Naples we are likely to meet at our collision repair shop. We are certified for collision repair on many of these models and are the preferred body shop for many of the supercar dealers.
As always…drive safe.
